Dayton Claudio

I describe my works as, “Clay-formed canvases.” The process involves capturing objects and textures in clay, then casting a solid “canvas.” This composed form presents a textured surface ready for painting. This allows me to use Imagery, color and depth to create a paradox of concrete surface and illusory space.

Dayton Claudio received a B.A. degree in art from the University of California Santa Barbara where studied with James Turell and John McCracken. He received an MFA degree in fine art from San Jose State University. He has enjoyed a successful career in public art since 1995 completing many projects around the country. His work is an investigation into the processes of nature. Using clay as a mold, he captures then casts highly detailed textured composites infused with painterly imagery.

Nora Pineda

Drawing from her Mexican cultural heritage, Nora Pineda's complex ceramics tie together modern abstraction and ancient mythology. Inspired by her Mexican heritage, Pineda's pieces incorporate characters that symbolize the way of life of Mexicans throughout the ages. She brings them to life with deep, undulating lines and stylized faces that are extremely expressive. Everything from the amount of lines used to the size of their bodies, carries significance in the story each piece tells. An important feature of Pineda's pieces is that they are created in the round, with the piece truly operating as a three dimensional object. These are not straight sculptures, but forms inspired by the traditional use of ceramics: the vessel. Pineda's shapes come directly from altered forms and manipulation of clay and many of these forms are functioning vessels.

Sadly, Pineda passed earlier this year in late April. A thoughtful obituary can be read here. Her estate is managed by her daughter, Michelle Beltran. She is currently represented by Agora Gallery, New York City, New York.

Introduction

Throughout its 70-year history, Chico Art Center has exhibited the work of artists from all walks of life, giving voice to new ideas and forms of creative expression. This commitment is evident in the Expressions in Contemporary Glass exhibition, which highlights the artistic potential of glass as a medium.

The call for art invited artists from California, Oregon, and Washington to submit original glass artworks, and the jurors carefully selected pieces that demonstrate the tremendous versatility of glass as a medium. This exhibition highlights how fertile the medium is for creative exploration, showcasing works that range from traditional techniques to inventive and experimental approaches.

Some of the works were created with both traditional and innovative approaches to glass artistry. It highlights the diverse techniques used in creating the pieces, such as glassblowing, stained glass, sand casting, fusing and kiln-casting. It emphasizes the skill and creativity involved in merging form with texture and the experimental nature of some of the works. The narrative also conveys the emotional and intellectual impact the artworks have on viewers, inviting reflection and conversation.

In addition to the exhibition, Chico Art Center has organized events that engage the community with the rich glass-making heritage of our region. These events include studio tours and demonstrations, where artists share their processes and offer insights into the intricate and fascinating world of glass. Visitors have the opportunity to learn directly from the artists, making meaningful connections while gaining a deeper appreciation for the medium. The exhibition and events honor and celebrate glass as a medium that is both imaginative and transformative.

Acknowledgments

The Expressions in Contemporary Glass exhibition is the result of collaborative efforts from many individuals. The jurors, Tamara Murphy, Pat Collentine and Shari Hopper, with their deep expertise in glass, carefully curated the exhibition.

Long time board member, Jana Lawton, helped make it possible to share this inspiring art with the community. We are grateful for her dedication to the arts and to Chico Art Center.

The production of this catalog was made possible with a grant from the Art Alliance for Contemporary Glass. Catalog design is by Carla Resnick.

We would also like to acknowledge the individuals whose ongoing support of the creative community has made a profound impact. Their dedication to collecting art has not only enriched the arts but also helped to make cash awards available for this exhibition. Their contributions and commitment to the arts play a vital role in the continued success and growth of the artistic community.

A special thank you to:

Grow with Us Open House

March 18, 2025 By Cameron Kelly

FB Event V2

We have officially signed a lease with the City of Chico to take over the additional spaces on the south end of the historic Southern Pacific Railroad depot, which has been vacant for many years. This expansion will allow Chico Art Center to offer more arts-related opportunities to its members and the broader community.

To celebrate this exciting milestone and gather community input, the Chico Art Center will host an open house on Sunday, March 23rd, 2025, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Community members are invited to tour the newly acquired spaces, share their ideas, and help shape the future of this expanded arts hub.

“For over three decades, the depot location of the Art Center has been a creative home for artists and arts supporters alike,” said Lisa Freeman-Wood, President of the Chico Art Center board of directors. “This expansion opens the door to new possibilities and more opportunities to engage. We’re eager to hear from our community about how we can best use this space to serve and inspire.”

Since its founding, the Chico Art Center has played a vital role in fostering artistic expression through rotating gallery exhibitions, a vibrant gift shop, hands-on workshops, classes, and special events. The additional space at the depot will enable the organization to expand its offerings, develop new programs, and further enrich Chico’s cultural landscape.

The Open House will be an interactive event, where visitors can explore the new areas, provide input on potential uses, and connect with fellow artists and community members. Whether you are a practicing artist, an arts enthusiast, or simply curious about the future of arts in Chico, your voice matters! Join us as we embark on this exciting new chapter and help shape the future of arts in Chico.
