GENERAL EXHIBITION INFORMATION

Since its inception in 1956, Chico Art Center’s mission has been to foster and promote the visual arts. Through our exhibitions, the diversity of talent that surrounds us is highlighted and recognized. The gallery director produces 13 exhibitions each year.

CHICO ART CENTER RESPONSIBILITIES

The Chico Art Center (CAC) works in partnership with artists to put on quality, professional exhibitions. CAC will be responsible for installing and promoting the show and hosting a reception for the artists. CAC facilitates sales of artwork shown in the exhibition. CAC reserves the right to use artwork images for promotional materials. CAC has an email list of 1500 members, interested parties, and community VIPs who are electronically notified about exhibitions and events. We also promote exhibits and events on our social media platforms, facebook.com/chicoartcenter and @chico_art_center on instagram. Postcards are available at the front desk and mailed to members (approx. 350). CAC will have sole discretion in selecting works to install as well as layout of all works within the show.

ARTIST RESPONSIBILITIES

Artists will cooperate in publicizing the exhibition by providing images for use on promotional materials and by providing biographical information in a timely fashion (usually within one month before the show).

The CAC does not insure the work exhibited in the gallery, however we do have an alarm system and a docent is on duty during gallery hours. The artist accepts responsibility for all work delivered and a release of liability waiver will be signed by participating artists. Artists may insure their artwork should they desire.

Artists are encouraged to attend the opening reception and/or virtual artist talk.  Most people who attend the reception enjoy meeting the artists. It is best if artists are prepared to speak about their work at the reception.

Pizza My Art is a playful way to engage with art and our community and over the last three years entries have really become quite extraordinary. For anyone entering the competition, it is a chance to stretch your imagination and to win cash awards, gift certificates for pizza, and consolation prizes. For art lovers and collectors, this exhibit and silent auction is an opportunity to view and acquire fun art for home or office.

As in previous years, our sponsors are  Mountain Mike’s, Grana, Mulberry Station, Woodstock’s Pizza, Tio's, Rione, Burbon Kitchen and Farm Star Pizza. They have donated pizza boxes, gift certificates and in-kind prizes. Cash prizes were donated by Becky Williams, Marion Hunziker-Larsen and Nicolai Larsen.

Special thanks to Nicolai Larsen for initiating this popular programming at Chico Art Center and to Marion Hunziker-Larsen for graciously producing this fundraiser.

June 2026 | Dolores Mitchell

March 9, 2026 By Cameron Kelly

 DOLORES MITCHELL

June 9 - July 17

Reception: Friday, June 26, 5:00-7:00 PM

Dolores Mitchell is considered by most to be a Chico arts icon. This exhibition provides a cross-section of the many subjects, styles and media Mitchell has practiced over decades.  Included are San Francisco fantasies as well as North state rice fields, orchards and bird refuges, and a Chico Icon series with Bidwell Mansion, the Senator Theater, bungalows and bar scenes.

Although Dolores Mitchell set her paints aside while teaching Art History at CSUC from 1970 to 2000, she continued to practice figure drawing and to sketch outdoors and in museums. She has a Bachelor’s degree in painting and a PhD in Art History from UCLA. After retirement, Dolores co-founded Avenue 9 Gallery with Maria Phillips and Giovanna Jackson, which gave her the incentive to paint seriously again. Mitchell is a regular contributor to Upgraded Living Magazine and promotes artists and art events in her newsletter, Art Talk. To sign-up for Art Talk, use this link.
