A Mixed Media Creative Arts Series
Cost: $100 for each day-long workshop
Instructor: Cynthia Schildhauer
The Four Cardinal directions have quite different associations in each culture around the world with one thing in common: they are essential, mysterious and in some way spiritual in nature. Nearly every ancient civilization regarded the Four Directions as Sacred. They are symbolically jam-packed with history, mythology, science, and poetry.
Cardinal Ways is a series of five monthly art workshops that will be an in-depth creative arts exploration of the Four Cardinal Directions starting with North, then South, East, West, and a final class called Center.
We’ll investigate the richness and meaning of each Direction using class presentations, discussion, and quiet reflection. We’ll use what we discover as prompts to create visual art. The goal is to make art using a variety of materials that is personally symbolic and playful, prompted by the rich nature of the Cardinal Directions as subjects.
It’s encouraged to plan on attending each month as to observe your work (and your well-being) progressing. You’ll be part of a creative journey with other folks which is a very significant experience. Finally, you’ll get to experiment with new art materials you may have never tried. Encouragement, suggestion, and instruction will be offered to participants, who may range from total novices to seasoned pros. Writers, poets, 3-D artists, and other genres are encouraged to join in…Open to all! Zoom participants will be monitored and cared for as well.
The 5 workshops will meet monthly on the second Saturday at the Chico Art Center or on Zoom live from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm (Pacific Time) Limited to 12 participants per class in person, Zoom unlimited, link provided upon registration.
Cost is $100 each day long workshop payable to the instructor.

Although a model is provided, it is not a class with an instructor. Joining the workshop is by permission from the group, which relies upon recommendations from group members and other references. 9:00am – 3:00pm
Monday’s Watercolor group meets in Room 1, from 9:00am to 3:00pm. This group is NOT FOR BEGINNERS; it is for those who have minimum previous watercolor experience. If you took Carol Preble-Miles' Watercolor class a long time ago, and are unsure of how to proceed, or you are a bit rusty and just need a “kick start” or, if you just want to paint in a group environment, try these open “sessions”.
Space in class is currently available. Contact Carol Preble-Miles at cpreblemiles[at)gmail.com or call and leave a message at (530) 893-8716 with any questions or for registration of class.

RENT A ROOM
Have you ever thought of sharing your art talents with others? The Chico Art Center is now opening its two rooms to artists wishing to rent a classroom for instruction. Due to the nature of the more restrictive AB-5 laws governing casual workers, the Center has had to set up new guidelines for classroom use. The Art Center classrooms are available for rent on a monthly or hourly basis. This allows you to have a one-time workshop or an ongoing class over a number of weeks. As the instructor, you pick your schedule, the artistic talents you would like to share, and set class costs. New responsibilities for instructors include recruiting students and collecting payment. We will assist you by listing your class offerings in our monthly newsletter and on our website.
OPEN & PRIVATE GROUPS
As the contact for a group, you may rent a room for a private group of artists or for an open studio group that invites artists to join. See a list of current open studio groups below.

As many of you know, we lost our beloved Sal to illness in December 2019, it was a great loss. We will all mourn him in our own way, and take from him many memories. The Art Center honored him with a collector's exhibit in February 2020. His daughter Kate wrote a wonderful obituary where you can learn a little more about this great man.
