November 6 - 28, 2010

Prospectus/Entry Form

The Small World, Small Works Exhibition was designed as an opportunity for local artists to show their work with other artists from around the nation and the world. Specifically, we hope to bring artists from all parts of the world together under one roof for our visitors to enjoy. We hope to enlighten our visitors about art made by people from regions of the world that they would not normally have an opportunity to see. We value the diversity found in all cultures today and believe that this event will bring people closer to one another through art.

In addition, the Small World, Small Works project will exhibit artists from all over the world together in multiple cities. Artists outside of the Chico area and abroad were invited to enter. We believe we can increase art awareness through the diversity that an international line-up of artists would provide. As this goes to print we have lined up a second city the 2009 exhibition will travel to with another in the works and hope to continue to add others to the total number of locations. The added locations will exhibit all artworks after the end of the CAC show and return to CAC for a one night fundraising auction to sell the unsold artworks. Auction date and other locations to be announced, so check back here or call us.

MFA at CAC

Discovery Series Exhibition

MFA@CAC

August 28 - September 19

The Chico Art Center will hold an exhibition of artworks by the Master of Fine Arts candidates and recent graduates from CSU, Chico. This show is intended to reveal to our community what is transpiring among the graduate art students working within the art studios at Chico State. The show is also part of our on-going series of exhibitions at CAC known as Discovery Series, which is dedicated to showcasing local and regional artists (although national artists are invited to exhibit along side our locals).

Since California State University, Chico, is practically in our backyard and the new MFA studio is right down the street from our gallery, we felt it was time to bring an example of what the graduate students there are doing into the Art Center. We also hope this gesture will nurture an increased symbiotic relationship between CAC and the CSUC community (and beyond, of course!).

In an effort to raise awareness and educate our community of this currency in the art world today, CAC invited Chico State graduate students in the visual arts to show their work in our gallery. We are pleased to have been able to create this opportunity to showcase works by new, up and coming artists at CSU- whose work and ideas are in contrast to much of the mainstream, traditional, and conservative works regularly gracing the walls of our gallery. Perhaps we will see students applying new approaches to traditional techniques, methods and formats that have been widely employed by artists throughout history.

Today's art world can be described as one that is rapidly evolving, changing, mutating and moving like a run-away train. Some of the inventiveness and originality of this change escapes many local galleries and one must seek museums and contemporary galleries afar to see examples of it.  We hope that this show will become an annual event and that viewers seeking currency in today's art will learn that they can visit CAC to see such work rather than having to travel to other distant venues.

What can you expect to see? We're certain you can expect to see something fresh and invigorating, but your guess is as good as anyone else's. But we can safely say that the Chico State graduate students are working with world events, social issues, personal, and impersonal, issues, within the content of their work.

This show will be indicative of the changing directions art has been taking in the 20th and 21st centuries. Chico State graduates were, and still are, producing and providing this community with outstanding examples of this trend.

MFA students exhibiting their art in this show are: Tim Adams, Megan Moore, Ruby Rudnick, Elizabeth Newman Kuiper, Chelsea Gilmore, Crystal Keesey, Brad Thiele, Sandi Escobar, Cyrus Lemmon, Erin Kelley, Mariam Pakbaz, Belinda Hanson, Trevor Lalaguna, Josua Olivera, Amie Rogers.

We urge everyone to plan to visit this show before it closes September 19th.

Jon Cummins,
CAC gallery director

California Fiber Artists

California Fiber Artists Show

July 31- August 22

The Chico Art Center presents artworks from the California Fiber Artists from July 31 through August 22. There will be fiber artworks that are more contemporary as well as those that employ a traditional use of fiber and fider(ous) materials.

There will be over forty examples of fiber art from the twenty-eight participating artists who explore various uses of fiber media. You will be treated to original works created from thread and yarns, from silk to cashmere, from wire and pine needles, to cable ties and paper, and much more.

It is the intention of CAC in selecting the California Fiber Artists for an exhibition, that it would show the many sides of fiber art today, from traditional to avant garde; from two-dimensional concepts to three-dimensional approaches that veer outside the norm for this genre. It is also my hope, that this show will attract visitors who are seeking to view fiber artworks that are inclusive of a variety of form, technique and materials. You will certainly see some very innovative interpretations and uses of the term fiber art.

Artists who will be exhibiting in this show are:
Louise Schiele, Bernita Dodge, Cynthia Jensen, Peig Fairbrook, Fern Tompkins Benson, Mary B Schwartzenberger, Sara Kelly, Leslie Carabas, Marjan Kluepfel, Lura Schwartz Smith, Nicki Blair, Camille Ahern, Sherry McKeever, Phyllis Cullen, Marjie McWilliams, Nadine Spier, Sharon Seale, Janet Coshow, Dee Danley-Brown, Sue Scott, Sherry Kleinman, Emily Dvorin, Debra Hosler, Ruth Tabancay, Julie Stiller, Julie Mitchell, Terry Waldron, Eva Henneberry.

Visit the opening reception of this show, which is on July 31, from 7-9pm, and meet many of the artists from this unique group. We hope you can attend!

Always Free. Donations can be made at the gallery entrance.

Rob Harper and Ronald Walker

Rob Harper and Ronald Walker

May 29 - June 20

Rob Harper received his MFA from Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri, 1974. He is a "fifth generation Chicoan, born in Enloe Hospital in 1942".

Mr. Harper paints small nostalgic, whimsical narratives primarily on teak wood with oil paint. Many of his works are diptychs or triptychs, as if intended to lead you through the scenes of nostalgic movies, the pages of romance novels, or familiar headlines of days gone by. There will also be plenty of interest for vintage aircraft buffs as one cannot help but notice a generous splash of aviation history gracing several of the artworks.

Mr. Harper's work can be found in the collections of The White House, Washington D.C., the San Francisco General Hospital, Val Kilmer, Estate of Johnny Carson, Permanent collection of O.K. Harris Gallery, N.Y., Walter and Alyse Haas, San Francisco. He is affiliated with O.K. Harris Gallery, New York, NY; San Francisco MOMA.

Ronald Walker received his MFA from the University of Kansas in 1991.
Mr. Walker describes his work as "Suburban Primitive", influenced by both the Dadaists and symbolist art movements of the twentieth century. "It serves as a type of metaphorical roadmap of my life which explores the inner aspects of my habitation in and movement through the suburban experience".

Mr. Walker's work is quite small and intimate- most works measuring a compact 11" x 14". His methodical work displays outsider rawness, and a subtle flirtation with art historical references such as Cycladic idols, and color from the Fauves. His work is esoteric, arcane, and charged with mysterious stories.

Mr. Walker's work can be found in the collections of Central Missouri State University, Art City, Ventura, CA. He is affiliated with Ghost Pony gallery, Tuchas, NM; Rigway's of Las Vegas, NV; Clockworks Gallery, Carmichael, CA; Palm Street Gallery, Ventura, CA; Triangle Gallery, Hollywood, CA.

This is a show that will captivate, mystify, and certainly entertain all viewers. It is definitely a pairing of two most unusual story tellers you will not want to miss.

Contemporary Woman IV

Contemporary Woman 4

All women artists exhibition

April 24 - May 23

Prospectus/Entry Form | Shipping Instructions

The Chico Art Center announces its 4th annual all-women exhibition, Contemporary Woman which runs from April 24 through May 23.

Female artists of all levels from the U.S. and Canada are exhibiting their art in this years show. Visitors will see diversity in media, technique, and styles and many of the artworks reflect this year's theme: "From the Heart".

This exhibition is a highly anticipated fundraising event for CAC and is rapidly becoming a favorite of artists and our gallery visitors far and near. This year's show is the largest and the best yet with one hundred and thirty artists showing nearly two hundred works of art. Artworks came in from around the country and three artists from Canada submitted works as well, although the strongest turn-out remains that of our local artists. We invite you to come to the show and see this homage to female artists everywhere!

All artists who entered works were guaranteed to be exhibited and were in the running for cash awards totaling $650.00. This year our judge was KHSL news anchorwoman and personality, Linda Watkins-Bennett.

Award winners for this year's show were:

First Award: Nora Lyon, for her mixed-media assemblage, Fairy Tale.
Second Award: Sienna Orlando, for her ceramic piece, The Storyteller.
Third Award: Marilynn Jennings, for her acrylic painting, Window To My Heart.
Honorable Mention: Oni Daniki, for her oil painting on panel, Spook III.

Appetizers and beverages were served at the reception and our guests enjoyed a special treat – an authentic Spanish shellfish, chicken, and chorizo paella prepared by Leonardo's of Chico. This was surely the best Contemporary Woman opening yet as visitors met the artists and enjoyed an evening of art, good conversation, tasty treats and fun.

Everyone here at CAC hopes that you will come and visit us and see this spectacular show before it ends!
