Mini COBA 2008

Mini COBA 2008
November 8-30

Reception for the artists: November 8, 7-9pm

The Mini-COBA exhibition is a fundraising spin-off of the former city mural project COBA (Chico Open Board Art). In the COBA project artists submitted proposals for murals which were to be installed throughout the city. Proposals were narrowed down to finalists by a selection committee. Finalists were then reproduced by the artists upon 48 x 48 inch boards that would be voted on by the community. The people's choice winner would then be reproduced a final time as a much larger scaled mural at a downtown Chico location.

Mini COBA, however, came into being as an outlet for any artist who purchased our 18x18 inch canvas to display their finished artwork in the annual exhibition of the same name. Artists of all ages and disciplines are featured. Works may include, but are not necessarily limited to, painting, drawing, photography and mixed media. Yes, some artists have attached photos, watercolor paper, and 3-D objects to the surfaces of the canvasses they've entered.

This is a show that stretches the imagination of the artists and visitors will be entertained by the diversity shown in their creativity. You won't want to miss this one so come to the opening reception and meet the artists.

Previously in the gallery CAC hosted the annual mini COBA exhibition. Thirty-two artists were featured in this years exhibition which included works by members, nonmembers, locals and out-of-area artists. The reception was busy and enjoyed by all as visitors met and mingled with the artists.

The mini COBA exhibition is open to anyone who purchases the official canvas from CAC- there is no limit to the number of entries a person can submit. Canvasses are available at CAC year-round so anyone can plan now for next years show. Mini COBA also happens to be one of our best fundraisers so we encourage everyone to participate and support your art center.

Alejandro Mendoza

Alejandro Mendoza:
Cross-ing Cultures from Cuba to Chico

Exhibition Dates: August 23-September 28
Reception: August 23, 7-9pm

Crossing Cultures is the title of the exhibition featuring Cuban-born artist Alejandro Mendoza. Mendoza brings his 3D “wall objects” and conceptual installation to the Chico Art Center beginning August 23, through September 28. The reception for this show is August 23, 7-9pm, with the artist to lecture on his work at 7:30pm.

CAC gallery director, Jon Cummins, has been planning this anticipated exhibition for almost a year and is pleased to have works arriving at CAC in the past weeks from Miami, Florida, where the artist lives and works. The title of the show was chosen in collaboration with the artist in hopes of bringing cultural awareness, culturally based art and artists to our community. Cummins is very interested in creating and maintaining an annual exhibition calendar at CAC that will have a balance of local, regional, national, as well as cultural artists.

Most of Mendoza’s artwork to be on display will be relief sculpture. There will be a mixture of 3D sculpture and installation work as well. All of Mendoza’s art references the Latin, a.k.a. Christian, cross. “To the artist, the cross is a most basic shape. Its image is universal, international. It transcends all cultures, religions and traditions. For Mendoza, it is a symbol of humanity". Mendoza's art is charged with social, religious and cultural commentary and narrative. His use of the cross implies angst and protest, while at the same time they allude to what is dearest to him, courage, hope and belief. He accepts the ambiguity and symbolism that each work stirs within us. This show is certain to be one of the years best and one that will create a deserved interest in Alejandro Mendoza’s work.

CAC is still seeking sponsors for this event. If you or your business are interested in being a sponsor please contact Jon Cummins at 530-891-5945. With your donation your name or company name or organization will appear on our marquee.

Admission is always free, however, donations are greatly appreciated and can be placed in the donation stand at the gallery entrance. This event will be open for the September 6, First Art Saturday 4-8pm.
